The Øresund connection is a fixed connection across the Øresund and connects the Danish capital Copenhagen with Malmö in Sweden . It consists of the Øresund Bridge , an artificial island and the Drogden tunnel .

The opening was on July 1, 2000 in the presence of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and King Carl XVI. Gustaf celebrated by Sweden. The connection between the Copenhagen metropolitan area (Denmark) and the greater Malmö area (Sweden) serves the transnational Öresund region and is used by the European route 20 and the København – Malmö railway line .

This 16 km long car and rail link is a tunnel - bridge combination with three main components:

The project was approved in September 1991. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on September 16, 1993. The total construction costs amounted to around 2.8 billion euros.

On the western side, the Øresund connection in Copenhagen begins at Kastrup Airport on an artificially created peninsula . From there, it leads through a caisson technology tunnel that is 3510 m long and ends on the artificial island of Peberholm. Four tubes serve the traffic: two railway tubes on the south side and two motorway tubes on the north side. Between the road tubes there is a technical corridor and an escape corridor along the entire length.

On the 4055 m long artificial island of Peberholm, road and rail traffic runs at ground level and is via a ramp structure of 3014 m in length and the Öresund Bridge to the east, a 7845 m long high bridge, the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world with 490 m span for railway and Road traffic, guided. The 3739 m long eastern access ramp connects to the Swedish mainland to the village of Lernacken . The traffic on the bridges is double-decker, the motor vehicle traffic over the rail traffic.

In 2002 the Öresund connection received the “ Outstanding Structure Award ” from the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE).

Terms of use for motor vehicles

A toll is charged for using the route , which is in the range of the tariffs for the ferry connection. The payment office for this is on the Swedish side. The advantage is a shorter travel time: the Øresund connection reduces the travel time between the two cities from 60 to 15 minutes.
