The International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE), literally translated International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering , is a worldwide scientific and technical association of the engineering construction industry . The official German-language name is, more comprehensive in terms of content, International Association for Bridge and Building Construction (IVBH).

activities

Thematically, the organization deals with the entire spectrum of civil engineering, regardless of the structural material: planning, design, construction, construction and site supervision, inspection, maintenance, renovation and maintenance, demolition and dismantling of structures .

Publications

IABSE technical information on individual topics is published in the Structural Engineering Documents (SED), work results in the IABSE Reports , IABSE Conference Reports and IABSE Congress Reports . The association publication of the IABSE is the quarterly journal Structural Engineering International (SEI). IABSE also operates an e-learning platform.

Young Engineers Program

In the Young Engineers Program (YEP) of IABSE members aged up to 35 years organized. The YEP supports the interests of young professionals and at the annual IABSE Symposium awards the Outstanding Contribution Award, endowed with prize money, for outstanding contributions by young engineers.

BAZAAR

BAZAAR (Briefings About Structural Applications And Research) is an accompanying event to the annual IABSE symposium, at which since 1997 the technical content from the work of the IABSE commissions has been presented to the symposium participants in the form of a trade fair in order to reach a broader public.

Awards

The association awards several awards:

  • honor membership ( Honorary Member )
  • the International Award of Merit in Structural Engineering for exceptionally significant contributions in the field of structural engineering, with a special focus on their social usefulness; first awarded in 1976
  • the IABSE Prize for extraordinary advances in structural engineering to members up to the age of 40 who are still at the beginning of their careers; first awarded in 1983
  • the Outstanding Paper Award for the author of the most outstanding written work published in the journal Structural Engineering International in the previous year; first awarded in 1991
  • the Outstanding Structure Award for the most remarkable, innovative, creative or otherwise sensational building in recent years. The award, which is presented at irregular intervals, goes to the engineer as well as to the architect (s), the company carrying out the work and the owner; the building is marked with a sticker; first awarded in 2000

founding

The founding manifesto of the IABSE was decided on October 29, 1929 - coincidentally exactly on the day later known as Black Tuesday , on which the global economic crisis began in the USA - by more than 600 engineers from 31 countries in Vienna . As early as 1926, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (Switzerland) organized a first meeting of over 200 structural engineers from 16 European countries, the initiator of which Arthur Rohn was later elected as the first President of the IABSE.

organization

Today the organization is headquartered at ETH Zurich. It has around 3900 members in 100 countries who are organized in 48 national groups (as of 2010). These organize their activities independently at national level and differ from country to country. For the content-related work at the international level of the IABSE, there are several technical committees, some of which are only temporary, the results of which are presented in publications or at conferences. Other non-technical committees are used for organizational work.

Presidents:

IABSE Foundation

The IABSE Foundation for the Advancement of Structural Engineering (IABSE Foundation for the Promotion of Structural Engineering) is a non-profit, tax-exempt foundation established in 1993 under the law of the Canton of Zurich. Its goals are to promote the exchange between theory and practice, between research and teaching, between decision-makers and the public, as well as technology transfer to developing countries. Since 1998, the foundation has been awarding the Anton Tedesko Medal in parallel to an established engineer for his life's work and to a skilled young talent as a further training grant, endowed with 25,000 Swiss francs , at renowned companies abroad.

Liaison Committee

IABSE is a member of the Liaison Committee of International Associations of Civil Engineering . This acts as a liaison office for the management levels of international civil engineering organizations. Other members are:

  • CIB: International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction
  • ECCS: European Convention for Constructional Steelwork
  • fib: International Federation for Structural Concrete
  • IASS: International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures
  • RILEM: International Union of Laboratories and Experts in Construction Materials, Systems and Structures

Germany

The chairman of the German IABSE group is currently Ulrike Kuhlmann from the Institute for Construction and Design I at the University of Stuttgart .

Switzerland

The IVBH Swiss Group (in the French-speaking areas of the Country Association Internationale des Ponts et Charpentes ) currently has over 500 members, mainly civil engineers. She maintains close contact with the specialist group for bridge and building construction of the Swiss Association of Engineers and Architects . Daia Zwicky from the Ecole d'Ingénieurs et d'Architectes de Friborg is currently president .

Austria

The Austrian IABSE group has its secretariat at the Institute for Materials Testing and Building Materials Technology at Graz University of Technology and is headed by Peter Maydl .
