Bruno Thürlimann (born February 6, 1923 in Gossau SG ; † July 29, 2008 in Meilen ) was a Swiss civil engineer and professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich .

Life

Bruno Thürlimann came from Gossau SG . After graduating from the College of St. Michael in Freiburg , he studied civil engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETHZ) from 1942. After graduating in 1946, he was an assistant to Professor Pierre Lardy until 1948 , before he went as a research assistant to Lehigh University in Bethlehem , Pennsylvania , where he received his doctorate in 1951 . This was followed by an assistant professorship from 1951 to 1952, from 1953 to 1960 he was a professor at Lehigh University.

1960 Thürlimann received as successor to Pierre Lardy a call to the Chair of Structural Analysis, building and bridge construction in stone, concrete, reinforced concrete and pre-stressed concrete at the ETHZ. In 1961/62 the controversy between Fritz Stüssi and Thürlimann about the load capacity method took place. From 1973 to 1990 he was a full professor of structural engineering and construction.

He was President of the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE) from 1977 to 1985 .

Act

Bruno Thürlimann's main research areas were concrete construction and prestressing, as well as the theory of plasticity in reinforced and prestressed concrete and masonry. He was a sought-after expert in this field around the world and was involved in construction projects such as the CN Tower in Toronto , the John Hancock Tower in Boston and the collapse of the Sleipner A oil platform in the Norwegian North Sea.

He has received numerous academic and professional awards, including honorary doctorates from the University of Stuttgart and the University of Glasgow and the 1997 Award of Merit in Structural Engineering . He was an honorary member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the American Concrete Institute and a full member of the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences . He gave the Annual Lecture at the Henderson Colloquium of the IABSE (Evolution of Structural Design).
