Pierre Lardy (born September 24, 1903 in Bern , † October 29, 1958 in Zurich ) was a Swiss civil engineer and professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich .

Life

Pierre Lardy came from a French-speaking Neuchâtel family. Born in Bern, he attended German-speaking schools there. In 1922 he obtained the Matura at the grammar school department of the free grammar school.

From 1923 he studied mathematics and physics at the ETH Zurich. He graduated in 1928 with a diploma as a subject teacher for mathematics. After that, Lardy taught for about a year as a math teacher at the Protestant college in Schiers . From 1929 to 1933 he worked as an assistant to the mathematics professor Gonseth at the ETH in Zurich and in 1934 did his doctorate with a thesis on the theory of continuous groups. Lardy then studied civil engineering at the ETH, which he graduated with very good grades in 1936. In 1937 he went on study trips to Europe and North America before founding his own engineering office in Zurich in 1938, which was mainly active in industrial construction. Due to frequent military service, he gave up self-employment in 1942 and succeeded Karl Hofacker as assistant to Max Ritter at the Institute for Structural Analysis.

In 1946, Lardy published Ritter, one of the first specialist books on prestressed concrete, and in the summer semester took over lectures for the deceased Ritter. On August 3, 1946, Lardy was elected by the Federal Council as a full professor of structural engineering, structural engineering and bridge construction in stone, concrete and reinforced concrete on October 1, due to his excellent scientific knowledge, despite his poor practice. In the following years he set up a model workshop at the institute, among other things. For many years Lardy was honorary general secretary for solid construction of the "International Association for Bridge Construction and Building Construction". Pierre Lardy died of a heart attack in late October 1958 at the age of 55 . Bruno Thürlimann became his successor in 1960 .

Lardy's best-known assistants include Heinz Isler and Christian Menn, as well as the former rector of the ETH Hans von Gunten and the former president of the ETH Hans H. Hauri .
