Peberholm is an artificial island in the Oresund , the strait between Denmark and Sweden . It was formed during the construction of the Öresund Bridge from 1995 to 2000 from the excavation work on the seabed and is located on Danish territory. The Danish name Peberholm (literally "pepper island") is an allusion to the natural island of Saltholm ("salt island"), which is about 1 km north of Peberholm.
Peberholm forms the middle part of the Øresund connection , here the transition between the tunnel ( Drogden tunnel ) and the bridge section ( Øresund bridge ) takes place. Since train and car traffic run side by side in the tunnel, but one above the other on the bridge, it is necessary to divert the traffic via a ramp before reaching the viaduct section of the bridge.
Peberholm has a length of about four kilometers with an area of about 1.3 square kilometers. The island was specially shaped so as not to unduly impair the flow of the Øresund.
Since this is a nature experiment, only scientists are allowed to enter the island. Also, no provisions were made for the settlement of animals or plants, for example no grass was sown on the island. One would like to find out in this way what kinds of life settle on the island. Among other things, the sprouting rock carnation ( Petrorhagia prolifera ) has been discovered there, which is also rather rare in Denmark and Sweden. The population of little tern pairs , along with other small birds such as whinchat , black redstart and wheatear , is also one of the largest in the neighboring countries. The field angle spider , which is not found anywhere else in Denmark and Sweden, can also be found here.
