The Drogden Tunnel , also known as the Øresund Tunnel , is part of the Øresund connection between Denmark and Sweden , along with the Øresund Bridge and the artificial island of Peberholm . The implementation of this part of the Øresund connection as a tunnel was necessary due to the proximity to Copenhagen Airport , as a bridge would have hindered air traffic . The only height-unrestricted access to the Baltic Sea runs above the tunnel, as the Great and Small Belts are completely spanned by bridges.

The straight tunnel connects the Danish islands of Amager and Peberholm and passes under the western passage of the Øresund , the Drogden , which runs between Amager and Saltholm .

When planning the Øresund connection, the combination of tunnel-island-bridge was used to enable ships with high superstructures to continue to pass through the Øresund . Instead of crossing the Øresund Bridge, these ships pass through Drogden Sound, nine kilometers long and eight meters deep. However, air traffic control at the nearby Copenhagen-Kastrup airport closes a runway for safety reasons when ships are announced in Drogden Sound with a height of over 30 meters, as the approach path of the aircraft is very low over the water of the sound.

For comparison: the draft of the ships may be up to 15.4 m above the Great Belt railway tunnel ( see Baltimax ), while the height is limited to ships with a maximum height of 65 m due to the Storebæltsbroen running parallel there . The Kiel Canal as an alternative route also allows a draft of only 9.5 m.

The total length of the combined road and rail tunnel is 4050 meters, of which 3510 meters are accounted for by the immersed tunnel and 270 meters for each of the two entrances. The tunnel consists of two railway tubes, two road tubes and a service and evacuation tube. It is composed of twenty construction elements measuring 176 m × 38.8 m × 8.6 m, each weighing 55,000 tons and being the largest prefabricated tunnel construction elements on earth.
