Construction element

As a component refers to a building in the component group . Building elements are prefabricated components that are mainly used to close openings in structures. These include windows including shutters , gates , doors including frames , flaps and stairs (and their attachments). Due to their predominantly industrial prefabrication and delivery to the installation site ( construction site ), the term prefabricated element is also common.

Stairs do not close wall openings, but they fill openings in floor slabs. They bridge differences in level between floors or storeys and make buildings accessible.

In 2012, components were sold or bought in Germany at a retail price (= gross) totaling 19.3 billion euros. That was 5.4% more than in the previous year. This number also includes “other building elements” (this includes light grids / grates, canopies, conservatories, railings and metal stairs) and shutters / blinds.

Sales-promoting factors were high prices for oil, gas and electricity, low credit interest rates, low-cost promotional loans from KfW for energy-saving construction elements and overall brisk construction activity (new construction and renovation of old buildings).
