Nordic triangle

The Nordic Triangle is the EU's TEN project number 12 . It consists of a road and a rail axis through Sweden and Finland. As part of the TEN-Neighbors program, this axis is to be extended to Norwegian territory.

The routes for road and rail vehicles are the same: The Nordic Triangle in Sweden consists of the three routes Charlottenberg –Lekhyttan– Stockholm , Stockholm– Nyköping - Malmö and Skottan– Trollhättan - Gothenburg –Malmö. In Finland the route Turku / Hanko - Helsinki - Lahti - Kouvola - Kotka / Vainikkala belongs to the Nordic Triangle.

Sweden

City tunnel

The city tunnel in Malmö is intended to accelerate rail traffic from Sweden towards Denmark and Germany and was started in January 2007 and opened in December 2010. The construction costs amounted to 542 million euros. In connection with this sub-project, Malmö Central Station is being redesigned into a through station. The redesign will cost 46.35 million euros and should be completed in December 2011.

Jarna – Norrköping and Norrköping – Linköping

The extension of the 150 km long line to two tracks and the completion of five stations are planned.

Finland

Helsinki

As part of the Nordic Triangle project, Ilmala station in Helsinki was renovated and expanded. The renovation was completed in December 2010 at a cost of 39 million euros. As a further sub-project of the Nordic Triangle, Helsinki Airport will be connected to Helsinki city center. For this purpose, four train stations will be built along the 17.5 km long double-lane passenger line and 7.5 km tunnels will be built. Construction is scheduled to be completed in December 2013 and may include four additional stops. The commissioning of the new line has now been postponed to summer 2015.


Lahti – Vainikkala

This section started in January 2007 and is expected to be completed in December 2013. The renovation of train stations and bridges and the renewal of tracks are intended to increase the maximum speed to 200 km / h and increase the axle load. The costs are estimated at EUR 244 million.

Kouvola – Kotka / Hamina

The 60 km section from Kouvola to the ports in Kotka and Hamina began in January 2008 and is expected to be completed in December 2013. The costs are estimated at 66 million euros.

Street

Norrtull – Värtan

One exit in Värtan and nine tunnels on European route 20 will be built. The costs are estimated at 986 million euros. Construction began in June 2007, and construction is scheduled to end in December 2013.
