Heimo Friedrich

Heimo Friedrich (born June 1, 1911 in Freileiten ; † March 17, 1987 in Natters ) was an Austrian botanist and cactus specialist. Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " H.Friedrich ".

Live and act

Heimo Friedrich first attended grammar school in Innsbruck and then began studying botany at the University of Innsbruck . In 1936 he began to work for the Biological Reichsanstalt in Berlin-Dahlem . Due to the war, Friedrich had to continue his scientific work in Natters . After the end of the war he began to study the cultivation and culture of pharmacologically active medicinal plants for the Herba company . Most recently, Friedrich worked in the crop protection department of the Tyrolean Chamber of Agriculture.

In addition to his work, Friedrich was particularly interested in the cactus family . He was instrumental in setting up the Tyrolean regional group of the Society of Austrian Cactus Friends . From 1966 to 1971 he was chairman of the Society of Austrian Cactus Friends. He was particularly interested in the systematics of the cactus plants , their cultural demands and their history. In 1963 Friedrich became a member of the International Organization for Succulent Research (IOS), for which he acted as secretary from 1971 to 1982. As part of his work for the IOS, he dealt with the genera Echinopsis , Lobivia and Trichocereus . In 1982 he was made an honorary member of the (IOS).

Taxa named after Friedrich

Gordon Douglas Rowley named the species Echinopsis friedrichii from the cactus family in his honor .
