The Royal Arena is a multifunctional hall in the Ørestad Syd district of the Danish capital Copenhagen . It was opened on February 3, 2017 and can accommodate a maximum of 16,000 visitors. The hall is surrounded by several hotels in the vicinity and is only a ten-minute drive from Copenhagen-Kastrup Airport.
history
In spring 2010 the city of Copenhagen and Realdania examined the realization of a multifunctional hall in Ørestad Syd, as there are two halls in Denmark, the Brøndby Hallen and the Ballerup Super Arena , which are considered not to be big enough for international competitions. In order to remain competitive in international competitions against cities such as London and Berlin, a hall of the necessary size should be built with which to compete for the 2017 Men's Ice Hockey World Championship and the 2019 Men's Handball World Championship . The contract was awarded for the handball world championship, but not for the 2017 ice hockey world championship. After the failed application, Denmark, with the Royal Arena and Jyske Bank Kasten in Herning, was selected as the venue for the 2018 Men's Ice Hockey World Championship . On March 1, 2018, the International Gymnastics Federation, Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG), awarded the 2021 Gymnastics World Championships to Copenhagen with the Royal Arena. The 50th world title fights are to take place from October 18 to 24, 2021.
The realization of a new multifunctional hall in Copenhagen was announced on September 23, 2011 at a press conference in the Bella Sky Hotel . The arena CPHX P / S, which was founded by the City of Copenhagen and Realdania, will own the hall. In February 2012 it was announced that Live Nation won the selection process against AEG Facilities as operator of the hall.
The design of the new hall was presented on June 7, 2012. The jointly developed design comes from the architectural offices 3XN, HKS, Inc., Arup, ME Engineers and the landscape architecture office Planit. Construction began and the foundation stone was laid on July 2, 2013.
On April 30, 2014, the building previously known as the Copenhagen Arena was renamed the Royal Arena, after the Danish brewery group Royal Unibrew .
The new arena was three concerts of American Metal - band Metallica opened on the 3rd, 7th, and 9 February 2017th The concert originally scheduled for February 5th was postponed to September 2nd of that year due to health problems of singer James Hetfield .
As the first major sporting event, the 2017 European Short Course Championships took place in the hall in December of that year.
financing
Most of the construction costs will be borne by the city of Copenhagen and Realdania at DKK 325 million each. The National Olympic Committee and Sports Confederation of Denmark as well as the Elite Facility Committee assume further costs . The property was made available by CPH City & Port Development.
When the works were completed, the cost of construction was DKK 1.4 billion (around € 188 million ).
