The 50th Dansk Melodi Grand Prix took place on March 7th 2020 in the Royal Arena in the Danish capital Copenhagen and will be the Danish preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam ( Netherlands ). format
concept
On May 10, 2019, the public broadcaster Danmarks Radio (DR) confirmed the participation of Denmark in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020. With this confirmation it was announced that the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2020 would take place in the Royal Arena in Copenhagen. This means that the preliminary round will return to the Danish capital after 2002.
On October 2, 2019, DR presented the concept for the preliminary decision. Accordingly, ten participants will again take part in the preliminary round on March 7, 2020. Unlike in previous years, a jury will only select seven participants and their songs. The three other participants should be determined by the audience of DR P4 . The nine regional channels of DR P4 (DR P4 Bornholm, DR P4 Fyn, DR P4 København, DR P4 Midt & Vest, DR P4 Nordjylland, DR P4 Sjælland, DR P4 Syd (DR P4 Esbjerg), DR P4 Trekanten, DR P4 Østjylland) will, in cooperation with a nine-member jury, choose nine songs from the submitted entries, which can be voted on in January 2020. The regions Syd, Øst and Nord each select one contribution. In addition, a jury will select two further entries that will receive a starting place in the final. In the final you will then meet five already qualified performers.
The following jury members are responsible for the selection:
- Sebastian Lind (DR P4 Fyn )
- Jacob Hansen (P4 Syd)
- Søren Krogh (P4 Trekanten )
- Bryan Rice (P4 Sjælland )
- Jonas Petersen (P4 København )
- James Benedict Thomas (DR P4 Bornholm )
- Laura Mo (P4 Nordjylland )
- Julie Berthelsen (DR P4 Østjylland )
- Marie Frank (P4 Midt & Vest)
According to Gustav Lützhøft, the aim is to involve the audience in the selection process for the Danish contribution even earlier and to offer the broadest possible musical range.
On March 6, 2020, DR announced that the Danish preliminary round would not take place in front of an audience due to the coronavirus . DR is therefore following the recommendation of the Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen to cancel or postpone all events that will attract more than 1,000 spectators. The broadcaster decided against it to hold the preliminary decision before a fixed maximum of 1,000 viewers. Instead, the competition takes place for the first time without a spectator. Originally, around 10,000 spectators should watch the preliminary round in the Royal Arena.
Moderation
On January 17, 2020, DR announced that in 2020 a duet would again host the show. Accordingly, Hella Joof and Rasmus Bjerg will take over the moderation.
Choice of contribution
From October 2nd to November 1st, 2019 composers had the opportunity to submit a contribution to DR.
Semifinals
On January 20, 2020, the participants and their songs from the regional preliminary round were presented. A total of five of these performers will qualify for the final. The audience chooses three, the other two participants are determined by a jury. The three winners of the audience vote were announced on January 24, 2020, while the two finalists selected by the jury will be presented on January 31, 2020.
