history

It has been held annually since 1957. However, a few times there was no Dansk Melodi Grand Prix :

  • 1967 to 1977 : Denmark did not take part in the Eurovision Song Contest during this period.
  • 1994 : Denmark had to take a forced break for the first time in 1993 due to the poor placement .
  • 1998 and 2003 : Denmark had to take another compulsory break due to the bad five-year average.

Systems and voting modes

At the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix, various systems and voting modes were used.

System 1957 and 1959

In 1957, Birthe Wilke and Gustav Winckler presented two titles as a duo and two titles each as a solo artist. In 1959, three artists, including Birthe Wilke again, presented a total of six titles in various combinations.

Classic preliminary decision

In the years 1958, 1960 to 1964 and between 1966 and 2006 and 2015, a classic preliminary round was held. Between five and seventeen artists each presented a title (in 1958 Raquel Rastenni presented two titles).

System 2007 and 2008

In 2007 and 2008, as in all other Scandinavian countries, a preliminary decision with two preliminary rounds was held.

System since 2009 (with the exception of 2015)

Since 2009, with the exception of 2015, 10 songs have taken part in the Dank Melodi Grand Prix, of which four reached a superfinal in 2011, and three since 2012, in which the winner will be decided.

Voting modes

In the early years, a jury voted, with the exception of 1964 when postcards could be sent in. Televoting was used for the first time in 1992, as was the case in 1996 and 2004 to 2008. In 1993, between 1999 and 2002 and since 2009 a mixture of jury and televoting has been voted.

languages

At the DMGP, all titles had to be presented in Danish until 2004 . The artist has been free to choose his or her language since 2005.

Dansk Danse Grand Prix

When the Eurovision Dance Contest was introduced in 2007 , the Dansk Danse Grand Prix was introduced as a preliminary decision. In 2008 such a festival should actually take place. Because of the few ticket sales, the festival was not held and the candidates were selected internally by DR .

Dansk Melodi Grand Prix Junior

Between 2003 and 2005 there was also a young talent competition called Dansk Melodi Grand Prix Junior . The DMGPJ was used to determine the participants from Denmark for the Junior Eurovision Song Contest . From 2006 there was no DMGPJ because Denmark no longer takes part in the JESC. The public broadcasters in Denmark and Norway withdrew from the competition in 2006. The reason for this, the children were exposed to too much pressure, was discussed controversially. Together with Swedish television they returned to the Melodi Grand Prix Nordic .
