Otto Carl Johan Lington (born August 5, 1903 in Copenhagen , † December 15, 1992 in Frederiksberg ) was a Danish musician ( violin ), composer , band leader and music publisher. Otto Lington is considered a pioneer of jazz music in Denmark.

Live and act

Lington began to be interested in music at the age of 14 and wrote his first professional arrangements. In the 1920s and 1930s he led his own orchestras, appeared in several films and played in the orchestras of Kai Ewans in Denmark, Jack Harris in Sweden and Bernard Etté in Germany. From 1927 to 1928 he belonged to a trio with Leo Mathisen and Anker Skjoldborg . He arranged the first major jazz concert in Denmark in 1929 and played an important role in the introduction of jazz in his home country; during this time he was nicknamed The White Negro . With his band - Otto Lington and his Lingtonians , he recorded a number of titles such as "Oh sikke en Niggerboy" and "Gör någonting" for labels such as Columbia Records and Edison Bell. In 1951/52 and from 1958 to 1972 Lington directed the orchestra at Tivoli Amusement Park in Copenhagen. In 1957 he took part in the Melodi Grand Prix with the singing number "Kærlighedens Cocktail"; for the Eurovision Song Contest in 1959 he wrote the song "Uh, jeg ville ønske, jeg var dig" (Eng: Uh, I wish I was you ), which was presented by Birthe Wilke and reached fifth place. Lington is buried in Søndermark Kirkegård cemetery in Frederiksberg .
