DR Byen in the making

DR Byen ( German roughly: "DR-Stadt") is a building complex and the headquarters of the Danish national broadcaster Danmarks Radio (DR) in the north of the Copenhagen district of Ørestad on the island of Amager .

DR's headquarters are on Emil-Holms-Kanal, which was named after the first director who worked from 1925 to 1937. All DR facilities in Copenhagen are housed under one roof in the complex. After the groundbreaking in 2002, the new buildings could be occupied four years later in July 2006. At that time, all DR employees' jobs were relocated from Radiohuset in Frederiksberg and TV-Byen in Søborg to DR Byen, which was one of the most progressive multimedia houses in the world when it was completed. DR Byen offers space for digitized radio, TV and online productions and, thanks to its flexible facilities, enables closer cooperation between the previously separate departments.

Segments

DR Byen covers an area of 124,000 m² and consists of four transparent segments, the seven-story buildings of which are connected to one another on the second floor by glazed walkways.

  • Various DR productions are located in segment 1. Editorial rooms, large studios, production staff, reception, studio foyer, workshops and warehouse are all housed here. With its 51,000 m² and 385 rooms, the building is the largest segment.
  • Segment 2 is, among other things, the broadcasting center for news and sports programs as well as the radio channel DR P3 . In the house there are 391 rooms spread over 32,000 m². From the local DR Nyheders Nyhedscenter , Denmark's most watched news magazine, TV Avisen , which has been broadcast since 1965, was broadcast for the first time on November 19, 2006 .
  • Segment 3 houses DR København , the administration and internal service areas. With 80 rooms on 17,000 m², the building is the smallest segment.
  • In the fourth segment, the DR Konzerthuset , which opened in 2009 , there are around 200 rooms in addition to the concert hall on an area of 26,000 m².

Planning and construction

Construction phase in June 2006

The architectural competition for the entire complex was won by the architectural office Vilhelm Lauritzen A / S , which was also responsible for the previous buildings Radiohuset and TV-Byen , while the concert hall was designed by the French architect Jean Nouvel . The construction was accompanied by economic problems, in which the concert hall in particular fell out of line. The budget was exceeded several times and in the end it was over three billion Danish kroner . As a result of the budget overruns, the general manager was replaced by a new one in 2004, who immediately introduced austerity measures and laid off over 300 employees.
