Bjarke Ingels (born October 2, 1974 in Copenhagen ) is a Danish architect . Since 2006 he has been running the architectural office Bjarke Ingels Group based in Copenhagen. In 2009 he co-founded the design agency KiBiSi. Ingels' designs are characterized by very clear, often striking and pragmatic ideas, combined with a playful approach.

biography

Bjarke Ingels studied architecture at Kongelige Danske Kunstakademiets Arkitektskole in Copenhagen and at Escola Tècnica Superior d'Arquitectura in Barcelona until he graduated in 1998 . From 1998 to 2001 he worked in the Office for Metropolitan Architecture for Rem Koolhaas in Rotterdam .

Bjarke Ingels has been a visiting professor since 2001, including at Harvard University in Cambridge and the Kongelige Danske Kunstakademiets Arkitektskole .

In 2001 Bjarke Ingels founded the architecture office PLOT in Copenhagen with his Belgian colleague Julien de Smedt .

The office attracted international attention early on with its innovative designs. At the 2004 Venice Architecture Biennale, it received the Golden Lion for designing a concert hall in Stavanger , Norway. In 2005 PLOT won its first major competition with the VM-Houses project. Despite the great success, the partners separated in 2006 and founded the offices of Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) and JULIEN DE SMEDT ARCHITECTS (JDS).

In 2010 Ingels opened an office in New York.

Bjarke Ingels pursued the ideology of PLOT and realized some larger projects, including the 8-Taller apartment building in Ørestad and the new Danish National Museum of Shipping in Helsingør.

As BIG, Ingels also published the architectural comic Yes is more - an archicomic on architectural evolution in 2009 for the exhibition of the same title in the Danish Architectural Center in Copenhagen.

Movie

For the documentary Big Time (Denmark 2017) the Danish director Kaspar Astrup Schrøder observed Bjarke Ingels' work for five years. The film was released in Danish cinemas in December 2017 and German cinemas in February 2018, after it had already been shown at the Nordic Film Days .
