VIA 57 West (marketed as VIΛ 57 WEST ) is a residential building designed by the Danish architecture firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG). The pyramidal or tetrahedral tower is 142 m and 35 stories high; it is located on West 57th Street in Hell's Kitchen , Manhattan . According to the New York Times , the name was chosen "because the south-facing West Side Highway drops off as drivers enter the city, at the exact point where the building is," and the square thus forms an entrance gate to Manhattan.

Emergence

Bjarke Ingels met New York property developer Douglas Durst in the early 2000s while he was in Denmark with his Danish wife. Durst, who visited Ingels' studio in Copenhagen in February 2010, found him very resourceful and noted that, unlike other architects, "every design was different and adapted to the environment."

In the spring of 2010, Durst Fetner Residential commissioned BIG to bring a new type of residential building to Manhattan. In 2011, BIG opened an office in New York to oversee the development and construction of W57. In mid-2012 the office had around 50 employees; currently (2016) it employs 150 people in New York.

West 57 is Ingels' first New York project. The unit with 750 apartments resembles a shifted pyramid with a steeply rising facade that rises up to 142 m to the northeast. The triangular structure has been described as a mixture of a European perimeter block and a traditional Manhattan skyscraper. With its angled balconies around a leafy courtyard, the block connects the banks of the Hudson with the Hudson River Park , blending in with its surroundings and offering spectacular views without too much traffic noise. The building offers a floor space of 80,000 m² for residential and retail use. The north facade has a number of balconies twisted by 45 °, a feature that BIG had already used in previous projects such as the VM Haus in Copenhagen's Ørestad district .
