Erik Holst

Carl Erik Holst (born June 21, 1922 in Nakskov , Lolland municipality , Sjælland region ; † April 25, 2013 in Fensmark Sogn , Sjælland region) was a Danish politician of the Social Democrats who was Environment Minister between 1980 and 1982.

Life

After graduating from school in 1940, Holst initially worked as a mechanical engineer and after completing a master's degree and studying mechanical engineering in 1948 at the mechanical and plant engineering company FLSmidth in Copenhagen , where he worked until 1962. In 1962 he joined the glassworks Holmegaard Glass Factory and served there until 1980 as a department engineer.

In the elections of November 22, 1966 , Holst was elected as a candidate of the Social Democrats for the first time as a member of the Folketing and represented the constituency of Næstved in this until the elections on December 12, 1990 . In the following years he dealt in particular with research, environmental and energy policy and, together with Vagn Dybdahl and Mogens Pihl, wrote the research policy points in the party program of the Social Democrats.

Together with Jens Kampmann , who was Denmark's first environment minister from 1971 to 1973, Holst, who was chairman of the Folketing's research committee from 1971 to 1974, played a key role in the adoption of the 1972 Environmental Protection Act. In addition to his membership in the Folketing, he was also a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe for the first time between 1972 and 1979, where he was chairman of the committees for the environment and energy policy. He also served as a member of the European Parliament between 1977 and 1979 .

On February 28, 1980, Holst was appointed Environment Minister by Prime Minister Anker Jørgensen to succeed Ivar Nørgaard and held this position until Prime Minister Poul Schlueter took office on September 10, 1982. He was succeeded as Environment Minister by Christian Christensen from Kristeligt Folkeparti .

Most recently, in addition to his membership in the Folketing, Holst was again a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe between 1985 and 1990 and at the same time again chairman of the committees for the environment and energy.
