Nicole Krauss
Nicole Krauss (* 1974 in New York ) is an American novelist.
Life
Her grandparents were Jews who - unlike other family members - managed to leave Europe on time. Krauss was married to the writer Jonathan Safran Foer until 2014 , with whom she has two children. Nicole Krauss studied English literature at Stanford University and at the University of Oxford ( Somerville College ). She also studied at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, which she completed with a thesis on Rembrandt .
During her studies, she began to publish articles in English literary magazines. Her literary interests are Rainer Maria Rilke , Zbigniew Herbert and especially Joseph Brodsky . Nicole Krauss was in regular correspondence with the latter. In 1999 she produced a portrait of Brodsky for the BBC for radio. Nicole Krauss organized several readings in New York, including those of the writers Susan Sontag , Derek Walcott and Jonathan Franzen .
Nicole Krauss took up her own family background in her novel "The Story of Love" - on the one hand it is about Leo Gursky, who escaped annihilation by the National Socialists over forty years ago and mourns his childhood sweetheart Alma, for whom he is still writing a book in Europe devoted to love. On the other hand, the novel is about a fourteen-year-old girl named Alma, who owes her name to the character Alma and is now investigating.
From November 2006 to February 2007 Nicole Krauss was a columnist for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung . Every second Saturday - alternating with Christian Kracht - a column was published under the title “My streets in ...”. From March 2007 Jenny Erpenbeck took over the column.
In 2007 Nicole Krauss was a Fellow of the American Academy in Berlin , where she worked on her third novel. She lives in New York.
In 2016 the film adaptation of the novel The Story of Love was published , directed by Radu Mihăileanu .
