Iona Campagnolo , PC , OC , OBC (* 18th October 1932 on Galiano Iceland , British Columbia as Iona Hardy ) is a Canadian politician . She was a member of the lower house from 1974 to 1979 and was a member of the cabinet. From 2001 to 2007 she was Vice Governor of the Province of British Columbia.

biography

Campagnolo grew up in Prince Rupert , where she later began working as a radio host . She later also hosted television shows on PBS . In 1966 she was elected to the school board, six years later to the city council of Prince Rupert. As a candidate for the Liberal Party , she participated in the 1974 general election and won in the Skeena constituency. Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau appointed her to the Cabinet in 1976, and as Minister she was responsible for amateur sports and fitness. In the 1979 general election , she narrowly missed re-election, and in the 1984 general election she ran again without success.

Campagnolo has worked as a board member or director in numerous non-governmental organizations . These included the North-South Institute, the Southern Africa Education Trust, the International Center for Human Rights and Democratic Development, and the North American Arctic Institute. She was also a co-founder of the Fraser Basin Council. From 1982 to 1986 she was President of the Liberal Party, which corresponds to a mainly administrative position. From 1992 to 1998 she was Chancellor of the University of Northern British Columbia .

Governor General Adrienne Clarkson sworn in Campagnolo as Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia on September 21, 2001. She held this representative office until September 30, 2007, when she was the first woman in this position.
