John Robert Nicholson
John Robert ("Jack") Nicholson , PC , OBE , QC (born December 1, 1901 in Newcastle (now Miramichi ), New Brunswick , † October 8, 1983 in Vancouver ) was a Canadian lawyer , manager and politician . From 1962 to 1968 he was a Liberal MP in the House of Commons and held several ministerial posts in Lester Pearson's administration . He was then Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia until 1973 .
biography
Nicholson studied law at Dalhousie University in Halifax . In 1924, he moved to Vancouver , where he opened a law firm and became one of the most prominent lawyers in the city. After the outbreak of World War II , he worked in the service of the German government as Vice- Controller of the Ministry of Munitions and Supply. From 1942 to 1951, Nicholson was the executive director of the state-owned Polymer Corporation , which manufactured synthetic rubber. He then headed the Brazilian Light and Power Company in Rio de Janeiro from 1952 to 1956 .
In the 1962 general election, Nicholson ran for a seat in the lower house and won the Vancouver Center constituency . When the Liberal Party won early elections in April 1963 , Prime Minister Lester Pearson appointed him Minister of Forestry. In February 1964 he took over the management of the postal ministry, from February to December 1965 he was immigration minister. He then headed the Ministry of Labor until April 1968, after which he resigned.
Governor General Roland Michener sworn in Nicholson on July 2, 1968 as Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia. He held this representative office until March 19, 1973.
