David Lam
David See-Chai Lam , OC , CVO , OBC ( chin.林思齊; born September 2, 1923 in Hong Kong ; † November 22, 2010 in Vancouver , British Columbia ) was a Canadian politician and entrepreneur . From 1988 to 1995 he was Vice Governor of the Province of British Columbia.
biography
Lam, the grandson of a Baptist minister, studied at Lingnan University in Hong Kong and Temple University in Philadelphia , where he received an MBA . He then worked in Hong Kong finance. In 1967 he emigrated to Canada with his family and received Canadian citizenship five years later. Lam became a successful real estate agent and started an investment company. In 1982 he retired from business life and set up a charitable foundation. He donated millions of dollars to social and educational causes.
For his charitable contributions, Lam received honorary doctorates from the University of British Columbia , Simon Fraser University , Baylor University , the Royal Military Academy, Eastern College, and Hong Kong Baptist College. Governor General Jeanne Sauvé sworn him in on September 9, 1988 as Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia. He held this representative office until April 21, 1995. Lam was the first person of Asian descent to gain a viceroy position in Canada.
