Guard Gardom

Guard Basil Gardom , OBC , QC (born July 17, 1924 in Banff , Alberta , † June 18, 2013 ) was a Canadian politician . He was politically active in the province of British Columbia for over two decades and held several ministerial posts. From 1995 to 2001 he was vice governor of the province.

biography

Gardom studied law at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver . He then pursued a career as a lawyer . In 1966 he ran in the Vancouver-Point Gray constituency with success for a seat in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia . He was re-elected five times in a row (1969, 1972, 1975, 1979 and 1983).

In 1974 Gardom moved from the British Columbia Liberal Party to the British Columbia Social Credit Party . The following year Prime Minister Bill Bennett appointed him to the cabinet, where he was initially Attorney General and parliamentary group chairman. From 1979 Gardom was Minister for External Relations, Chairman of the Legal Commission and Director of the provincial insurance company Insurance Corporation of British Columbia . In 1985 he was appointed in charge of official visits to Expo 86 and, in this capacity, hosted numerous dignitaries from around the world.

Gardom retired from politics in 1987 after being appointed General Agent for British Columbia in London. As such, he represented the interests of the province in Great Britain and various European states. Governor General Roméo LeBlanc swore him in on April 21, 1995 as Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia. He held this representative office until September 21, 2001.
