Walter Stewart Owen
Walter Stewart Owen , OC , QC (born January 26, 1904 in Atlin , British Columbia , † January 13, 1981 in Vancouver ) was a Canadian attorney and manager . From 1973 to 1978 he was Lieutenant Governor of the Province of British Columbia.
biography
The son of a police officer was the first chairman of the British Columbia Youth Parliament in 1924 . Owen studied law at the University of British Columbia , was admitted to the bar in 1928 and opened a law firm in Vancouver . In 1933 he was named Canada's youngest Crown Attorney at the time. In 1942 he left the civil service and built his company Owen Bird into one of the most renowned law firms for corporate law . From 1958 he presided over the Canadian Bar Association , the union of the Canadian bar associations .
In 1956, Owen and his business partner Frank Griffiths acquired the CKNW radio station in New Westminster and co-founded Western International Communications Ltd. Governor General Roland Michener sworn him in on March 19, 1973 as Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia. Owen held this representative office until May 18, 1978. His son Philip Owen was Mayor of Vancouver from 1993 to 2002.
