Miramichi is a city in the Canadian province of New Brunswick . It was founded on January 1, 1995 at the suggestion of the then Provincial Prime Minister Frank McKenna . The name was chosen because of the exposed location on the Miramichi River . The new city is an amalgamation of the small towns of Chatham , Newcastle , Douglastown , Logieville , Nelson and some smaller parishes. The Centenial Bridge over the Miramichi River connects the northern and southern parts of the city.

geography

Miramichi is located in Northumberland County on the Miramichi River, immediately before its extension to Miramichi Bay and about 35 kilometers from its confluence with the Gulf of St. Lawrence .

history

The area of today's city of Miramichi was inhabited by the Mi'kmaq Indians hundreds of years ago. When the Acadians settled America , this region became part of the French colony of Acadia . After 1754, the British took over the area as a result of the Seven Years' War in North America . In the period that followed, more and more people immigrated from Ireland and Scotland . Thereafter, the aforementioned small towns developed independently until the merger in 1995.
