Brookfield Asset Management Inc. is a publicly traded Canadian asset management company headquartered in Toronto. Brookfield invests for its customers through various funds mainly in so-called alternative assets, especially in the real estate and infrastructure sector (transport, renewable energies, etc.). Brookfield employs around 23,000 people worldwide and operates in twenty countries, including South America, Asia, Australia and Europe. The holdings in the company's portfolio amount to approximately 150 billion Canadian dollars. The company is listed in Canada's leading index S & P / TSX 60 and is listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange .

history

In 1899 the São Paulo Railway, Light and Power Company was founded by William Mackenzie, Frederick Stark Pearson, and other businessmen. In 1904, a few years after it was founded, the word railway was changed to tramway and the company was called Rio de Janeiro Tramway, Light and Power Company, which was newly founded by the Mackenzie's Group. In 1912 the Brazilian Traction, Light and Power Company Ltd. brought to the stock exchange. The company began with the generation of electricity from natural raw materials and also offers this in Brazil. 1916 the Great Lakes Power Company Limited provides hydropower in Sault Ste. Marie and the Algoma District in Ontario. 1966 the Brazilian Traction, Light and Power Company Limited changes its name to Brazilian Light and Power Company Limited . In 1969 the Brazilian Light and Power Company Limited was renamed to Brascan Limited (BL) . 1979 the Brazilian assets were transferred to the Brazilian subsidiary, Eletropaulo and Light SA . The company began expanding its holdings in other business areas.

In 2005 the company was renamed Brookfield Asset Management (BAM) .
