José María Cañadas Bueno

José María Cañadas Bueno (born April 14, 1897 in Granada , † January 9, 1975 in Seville ) was a Spanish gynecologist and anatomist .

Cañadas was the son of a doctor. After his training, which he completed with several awards, he applied as a military doctor in Madrid. Dissatisfied with this position, he moved to the Navy after a year. During this time he was personal physician to Prince Albert I of Monaco and received a medal for this activity.

Afterwards Cañadas worked as district manager of the newly created health authorities ( Cuerpo de Sanidad Nacional ) in Pontevedra and Logroño and founded the hygiene institutes there. At the age of 31 he was appointed professor of anatomy at the University of Seville . There he also held the position of the city obstetrician.

In 1935 Cañadas had a pair of forceps patented, the shape of which enabled a gentler birth. This invention became so well known that the humorist Álvaro de Laiglesia mentioned it: "The Andalusians are so original that they even give their forceps the shape of castanets."

From 1936 Cañadas became involved in the Falange movement. He was a member of the first triumvirate in Seville. As a doctor, he was responsible for organizing the health care system in Seville. Among other things, he headed the municipal maternity hospital and the port's health department. After the civil war , Cañadas was not politically active again.

In the academic year 1939/1940, José María Cañadas was visiting professor of topographical anatomy at the University of Barcelona . After 1945 he received another position as a maternity doctor at a clinic in Seville. In 1949 he was appointed vice dean of the medical faculty and finally dean in 1959. With a lecture on tumors of the ovary , Cañadas became a member of the Royal Medical Academy in 1966. A year later he retired and founded an anatomical museum. He died of cancer in 1975.

In addition to his medical work, he was involved in the cultural associations called Ateneo . He was also a skilled draftsman and created paintings and sculptures.
