Shaw Communications was a former Canadian company headquartered in Calgary . The company was listed in the S & P / TSX 60 stock index and on the NYSE and employed around 12,500 people (as of 2011). It offers a landline telephone network and broadband Internet access and operates a network of television stations in Canada. In January 2016, Shaw Communications was taken over by Corus Entertainment , a former subsidiary.
history
The company was founded in 1966 under the name Capital Cable Television . In 1971 - under the direction of company founder JR Shaw - the first cable connection was laid in Sherwood Park, Alberta . During the 1980s and 1990s, the company grew by acquiring companies like Classicomm in the Toronto area , Access Communications in the Nova Scotia area , Fundy Cable in New Brunswick , Trillium Cable in Ontario , Telecable in Saskatchewan, and Videon Cablesystems in Winnipeg . One of its subsidiaries is Shaw Satellite Services , which StarChoice operates.
Takeover of CanWest
In February 2010, Shaw announced an agreement to acquire financially ailing telecommunications company CanWest . Shaw took over 80% of CanWest, the remaining 20% is in the hands of several investors. Three months later, the company announced that Shaw would take over CanWest's entire broadcasting division, including CW Media.
On October 27, 2010, the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) approved the acquisition, subject to conditions. Since then, the Broadasting division of Shaw Communications has operated under the name Shaw Media.
The requirements of the takeover included:
- switching off 67 analog TV transmitters and switching to digital systems
- the free installation of satellite reception systems for private customers for whom the offer via broadband cable is not possible
- A two-hour morning regional newscast started in Regina, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal and Halifax
- Investing in new media content
