history

Cominco began operations in 1906 as The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, formed by the merger of several entities controlled by the Canadian Pacific Railway. The company changed its name to Cominco in 1966. Cominco's main mine "Sullivan mine", which started production in 1909, was operated for more than 90 years until its ore deposits were exhausted in 2001.

The Teck company began as "The Teck-Hughes Gold Mines Ltd." in 1913, which developed from a gold find by gold prospectors Sandy McIntyre and James Hughes near Kirkland Lake. The Teck-Hughes mine produced until 1965. In 1969, Teck bought the Beaverdell mine. This silver deposit was first discovered in 1898 and was exploited until 1991.

The merger of Teck and Cominco began in 1986 when Teck and two partners acquired a stake in Cominco. The complete takeover happened in July 2001.

In 2007, Teck Cominco acquired “Aur Resources” and thus gained access to the major copper mines Quebrada Blanca and Carmen de Andacollo in Chile.

In 2008, Teck Cominco announced an agreement with the Fording Canadian Coal Trust to acquire 100% of their 60% stake in the Elk Valley Coal Partnership. Teck Cominco previously had a minority stake of 40%.
