history

In 1950 the cheese master Giuseppe Saputo and his eldest son Frank left their small village Montelepre in Sicily and emigrated to Canada. In 1952 the rest of the family followed.

After a difficult first few years in Montreal, Lino Saputo convinced his father Giuseppe to start his own company. In September 1954, Giuseppe bought basic equipment and a bicycle for supplies for $ 500. That was the beginning of the company.

In 1957 the first production facility was built in Montreal Saint-Michel. This event coincided with the sudden surge in popularity of pizza among North American consumers.

In the 1960s, Saputo experienced a significant period of growth as the demand for its products increased.

In the 1970s, Saputo bought several production facilities and developed its own national distribution network. Saputo became Canada's most important mozzarella manufacturer.

During the 1980s, Saputo acquired a whey processing plant. The company entered the United States for the first time with the acquisition of two plants.

In 1997 the company went public in Canada. The company tripled its size and became one of the leading natural cheese producers in the United States through the acquisition of "Stella Foods". Saputo also took over the Canadian “Crémerie des Trois-Rivières Ltee.” To enter the liquid milk market. In 1999, Saputo acquired Culinar Inc., a leading manufacturer of snack cakes, bread, soups and biscuits in Canada.

In 2001, Saputo became number one in the Canadian dairy processing industry through the acquisition of Dairyworld Foods, a major Canadian producer of liquid milk, cheese and other dairy products. Dairyworld Foods was a branch of "Agrifoods International Cooperative Ltd." Agrifoods International itself was the result of a series of mergers between dairy cooperatives in western Canada in the 1990s. Armstrong Cheese was formerly an independent cheese maker in Armstrong, British Columbia , acquired by Dairyworld Foods in 1997. After the takeover by Saputo, production in Armstrong was closed.

Saputo partnered with Dare Foods to manufacture and market biscuits, bread and soups from its acquisition of Culinar.

In 2003, Saputo became a leader in blue cheese production for the United States through the acquisition of the Treasure Cave and Nauvoo brands . In the same year the company expanded beyond North America with the acquisition of "Molfino Hermanos SA", Argentina's third largest milk processor.

In 2005, Saputo continued to grow by acquiring majority stakes in Quebec-based "Fromage Côté SA", as well as "Kingsey Distributions Inc." and "Schneider Cheese, Inc.", an American cheese maker.

Saputo entered the European market in 2006 by taking over the De Lucia specialty cheese dairy in Heiden in the Münsterland region , which produced Italian cheeses such as mozzarella, ricotta and mascarpone . In April 2007, Saputo acquired a majority stake in the industrial cheese business from the Land O'Lakes West Coast cooperative . Activities included the production of mozzarella and provolone in Tulare , California . Saputo entered the European market once more by acquiring a majority stake in "Dansco Dairy Products Limited" in March 2007, based in Newcastle Emlyn, Wales, Great Britain. Dansco mainly produces mozzarella. In 2013, Saputo withdrew from Europe because the intended critical size was not reached. The plant in Germany was sold to the small Velener dairy Wiegert and has since been run under the name “Specialty Cheese Dairy Wiegert”.

In April 2008 the company took over a majority stake in the Wisconsin- based "Alto Dairy Cooperative". The business areas include the production of Italian and American "style cheeses" as well as whey, which are sold under various brand names across the country. In December 2008, Saputo took over the activities of "Neilson Dairy", a division of "Weston Foods (Canada) Inc.", which primarily sells milk and cream in Ontario.

In June 2009, Saputo completed the acquisition of F&A Dairy of California Inc., which manufactures mozzarella, provolone and whey products at a facility in Newman, California.

In January 2013, Saputo took over the US company “Morningstar Foods LLC” from “Dean Foods Company”. The US company makes 2/3 of its sales from products sold to restaurants, including coffee, cream, ice cream, cottage cheese and sour cream.

In February 2014, Saputo acquired 87.92% of Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory Holdings Ltd., the fourth largest dairy company in Australia.

In April 2014, Saputo acquired the liquid milk activities of "Scotsburn Co-Operative Services Ltd." in Canada. The business areas consist of the production of milk, cream, sour cream, ice cream mix and cottage cheese. In May 2015 this Australian subsidiary bought the “everyday cheese business” (“EDC Business”) from Lion-Dairy & Drinks Pty Ltd. in Victoria, Australia.
