Lino Saputo

Emmanuel Lino Saputo , OQ (born June 10, 1937 in Montelepre , Italy ) is an Italian- Canadian entrepreneur . He is the founder of Canadian cheese maker Saputo Inc. According to Forbes magazine , Saputo is the eighth richest person in Canada and ranks 339th on the list of the richest people in the world. His estimated net worth is $ 5.2 billion as of February 2020

Life

Saputo was born in Montelepre , Sicily , Italy in 1937 , the son of Giuseppe Saputo, a cheese maker, and his wife Maria. He completed secondary school in the early 1950s from, and shortly after the family emigrated to Saputo Montreal ( Quebec ) from.

Career

Saputo became Chairman of the Board and President of Saputo Inc. in 1969. In 1998, when the company went public , he was named Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). In March 2004, his son Lino Saputo Jr. was named President and CEO, while Saputo himself continued to pretend to be the company's chairman. In August 2017, Lino Saputo Jr. took over the role of chairman. Saputo Senior remains the majority shareholder in the company. Saputo also has a significant stake in the transport company TransForce. He has made extensive investments in real estate, forest products, hotels and golf courses.

As a philanthropist

In July 2006, Saputo donated CAD 7.5 million to build Montreal Impact's Saputo Stadium in the Olympic Park . In 2011 he was appointed Officer of the National Order of Quebec . In May 2012, he was made a member of the Order of Canada (CM), as announced in the Government House on June 29, 2012 and in the Canada Gazette on September 1, 2012 .

Private life

Lino Saputo is married to Mirella Saputo. They have three children together and live in Montreal. His son Saouto Jr. was named Canada's Outstanding CEO of the Year by the Financial Post in 2019.
