Emera is a Canadian utility based in Halifax .
The company generates more than half of its sales in Florida , where it operates through its subsidiaries Tampa Electric and Peoples Gas.
The company was founded in 1998 as a holding company for utility Nova Scotia Power , which was being privatized at the time. Due to its past as a state-owned company, restrictions to protect against foreign takeovers still apply. As a result, no foreign shareholder can dispose of more than 15% of the shares in the company. Before the regulation was relaxed, at least 75% of the shares had to be held by Canadians.
