history
After the CBC and CTV networks were established in Canada, some cities called for a third network to be established in Canada during the 1970s. A group of investors, led by Al Bruner and Peter Hill, founded Global Communications Ltd. with the aim of supplying more remote areas in Canada via UHF . The group of investors decided to set up a six-transmitter network that would be located in southern Ontario and stretch from Windsor to Ottawa . The Alexandria community fought against a transmitter mast so that the signal could not be broadcast in Montreal . The investor group promised a high quality program with mostly Canadian content and no local advertising. The new Global Television Network (callsign: CKGN) began broadcasting from an old factory floor in Don Mills on January 6, 1974 at 6:00 pm. In just three months, the station ran into financial difficulties and was taken over by Canwest. Due to the financial crisis and the economic slump in 2008-2009, Canwest ran into financial difficulties and had to be placed under Canadian bankruptcy protection. In this situation, the company was restructured and released its media area specifically the television media area for sale. The Canadian telecommunications company Shaw Communications Inc. took over this part of the company from Canwest and founded the subsidiary Shaw Media in 2010.
