Life

Niemi's father was a police officer, his mother a teacher and speech therapist. He dreamed of becoming a writer at an early age and began writing poetry and short stories at the age of 15. After graduating from school, however, he initially completed a four-year training course as an electrical engineer.

Niemi made his debut with the collection of poems Näsblod under Högmässan (in German nosebleeds during church services ). Since then he has written poetry, prose, dramas and radio plays.

With his first novel, which appeared in Swedish in 2000, Niemi made his big breakthrough: Popular music from Vittula is set in Pajala , Sweden , the author's home. Niemi draws a lot of inspiration from her own experiences with bilingualism ( Swedish - Finnish ) in north-eastern Sweden. The novel was number one on the bestseller list for months, sold over a million copies and has been translated into 24 languages. Popular music from Vittula was filmed in 2004 with Göran Forsmark , Gustav Wiklund and Kati Outinen .

His short story volume Das Loch in der Schwarte was published in 2004, and the German translation followed in 2006.

His novel "Mannen som dog som en lax" (German 2008 " The man who died like a salmon "), published in Swedish in 2006 , is also set in Pajala (and Stockholm). In contrast to his previous prose, this book is a detective novel. Here too, however, Niemi's preferred topic of bilingualism in north-eastern Sweden and the associated conflicts serve as the basis of the plot. In 2010, Niemi published the novel Shoot the Orange , which was published in German in 2011. The novel is about the problems of a closed 16-year-old student who makes enemies at school through his provocative behavior, but also makes friends.
