The hole in the skin (in the original: Svålhålet ) is the second novel by Mikael Niemi . In Sweden , his homeland, the novel was first published in 2004, the German translation was published in 2006.

The book consists of around 20 episodes that are only loosely related. The narrator is a "roader", a space traveler who tells some stories from space and discoveries on earth. This ranges from explanations of the most famous bar in the universe, the "hole in the skin", to a discussion of the origins of the universe. There is a sense of humor throughout the book similar to the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams . Mikael Niemi himself says that he was inspired by The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy .
