Andreas Eschbach (born September 15, 1959 in Ulm ) is a German writer and bestselling author . He has received several awards for his works and is considered one of the most important European science fiction authors.

Life

Eschbach studied aerospace engineering in Stuttgart , but did not graduate, but worked as a software developer and entrepreneur until his success as a writer allowed him to concentrate on writing. He has been living in Brittany for the second time since 2003 .

Artistic creation

Eschbach's first published novel The Hair Carpet Knotters (1995) can also be read as a collection of short stories all set in the same science fiction universe. He takes up this universe again in Quest (2001), a novel designed as a classic space opera . Solarstation (1996) is designed as a real thriller . With Kelwitts Stern (1999) Eschbach parodies the story of ET and relocates it to the Swabian Alb.

Eschbach's first bestseller is Das Jesus Video (1998). The thriller, the basic idea of which is based on a journey through time , takes place entirely in the present. With One Billion Dollars (2001) , Eschbach moves even further away from the fantastic . Only the idea of a $ 1,000,000,000 inheritance that originated sometime in the 16th century is fantastic. The thriller is driven by the question of who will end up holding money and thus power. On almost 900 pages the reader also learns a lot about economics and money.

The novel The Nobel Prize uses no fantastic elements, kidnapping and blackmailing a member of the Nobel Prize committee set the story rolling. Apparently Eschbach is constructing an economic thriller, but in the end you learn a few surprising things about the main characters, things that let the actors and the plot appear in a completely new light.

Burnt out describes the emergence and consequences of a profound energy crisis , triggered by exceeding the global maximum oil production , also known as “peak oil”. With this material as a basis, Eschbach approaches science fiction again . What will the world be like when we run out of cheap oil? With this book, Eschbach shows a glimpse into the possible future.

From September 2001 to June 2002 his serial novel Exponentialdrift was published in 42 parts in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung . Eschbach also wove current references into the plot. The collected sequels were then published as a book with a detailed afterword on the genesis.

As the first of several guest authors in the meantime, he wrote the 1935th volume of the Perry-Rhodan series in 1998 and was thus able to fulfill a childhood dream. In the course of time there were also five other guest novels and five short stories. One of the following guest novels was the writing of the anniversary volume 2700 in 2013, which was previously usually reserved for one of the main authors of the series. He received a special honor when Andreas Eschbach was invited to the Leipzig Book Fair 2017 to write the prequel ( How it all began ) for the Perry Rhodan series. The novel was published in 2019 as Perry Rhodan - The Greatest Adventure and tells the story of the title hero Perry Rhodan before the flight to the moon, who started the Perry Rhodan series with volume 1.

His works have been translated into numerous languages. In April 2005 appeared as the first translation into English his debut novel, The Carpet Makers under the title The Carpet Makers 2014 in the USA, Lord of all things as Lord Of All Things . Further translations were carried out into French ( The last of its kind in 2006 as Le Dernier de son espèce ), Italian ( The carpet weavers 2001 as Miliardi di tappeti di capelli ), Spanish , Dutch , Czech , Polish , Russian , Latvian , Japanese and Turkish .

Teaching

For many years, Andreas Eschbach has been actively involved as a senior speaker at writing seminars for young writers. In addition to extensive book tips on the subject, its website also offers a long list of questions and answers that Eschbach has answered by email over the course of time. This service will be continued on the website, but Eschbach stopped active seminars at the end of 2007.

On the initiative of Andreas Eschbach, a writing experiment took place under his and Klaus N. Fricks direction at the Federal Academy for Cultural Education Wolfenbüttel in 2005: 15 participants in a writing seminar wrote the rough version of a complete novel within 44 hours.
