Michael Marrak

Michael Marrak (born November 5, 1965 in Weikersheim ) is a German graphic artist and author . His literary work spans a wide range of science fiction , horror , fantasy , grotesque , and fantastic literature . He has received several awards including the Kurd-Laßwitz Prize and the German Science Fiction Prize .

Life

Michael Marrak grew up in Weikersheim ( Tauberfranken ) until he was ten years old and spent his youth and early adulthood in the greater Stuttgart area . From 1983 to 1986 he completed an apprenticeship as a wholesale salesman , and from 1988 to 1991 a further apprenticeship as a graphic designer . From 1996 to 1997 he did advanced training in the field of desktop publishing / screen design , multimedia and animation . While he initially worked as an illustrator, writer of short stories and editor of magazines and anthologies, from 1995 he devoted himself increasingly to writing.

In 1980 he wrote his first story and started drawing around the same time. His first story ( The Eyes of Aasac ) appeared in a short story book in 1990. From 1993 to 1996 he brought out his own fanzine Zimmerit , in which he also published his own stories and graphics. He was also the editor of several issues of Andromeda magazine until 1997 . In 1997 monochrom published his first novel Die Stadt der Klage and shortly afterwards the surreal play Weg der Engel . Together with Malte S. Sembten , he was editor of the Maldoror series from 1998 to 1999 . In 2000 his novel Lord Gamma was published, as well as in 2002 the novel Imagon , based on his novella Der Eistempel . In 2005 Morphogenesis was published as an elaboration of The City of Lament . Since 2006 Marrak was involved in the creation of the massively multiplayer online role-playing game Black Prophecy , the background story of which he wrote. In 2008, his youth novel Das Aion was published by Ravensburger .

Michael Marrak lives in Schöningen am Elm.

Awards

In 1997 Marrak received the European Science Fiction Award in the “Best Artist” category. In 1999 he was awarded the German Science Fiction Prize for The Silence of the Sound as the best German science fiction story. In 2000 he received the German Science Fiction Prize and the German Fantastic Award in the category “best German story”, as well as the German Fantastic Award for Der Agnostische Saal 2 as the best original anthology for his short story Revenants . In 2001, his novel Lord Gamma was awarded the Kurd-Laßwitz Prize and the German Fantastic Prize . In 2003 he received the Kurd-Laßwitz-Preis for his novel Imagon , as well as the German Phantastik Award for Numinos as best short story. In 2005 his cover picture became Fantastic! # 15 was awarded the Kurd-Laßwitz Prize in the category “Best Illustration” in the Science Fiction category. His story Coen Sloterdyke's diametrically levitating Chronoversum was selected as the best German-language SF story for the 2014 Kurd-Laßwitz Prize.

In 2018, Marrak's work The Canon of Mechanical Souls was awarded the Seraph Fantastic Literature Prize as “Best Book” and the Kurd-Laßwitz Prize for the best novel. In 2019 he received the KLP again. This time as a graphic artist for The Journey to the Center of Time .
