Fantastic Literature Prize Seraph
The Seraph is a genre- specific literature prize for German-language fantasy literature. It has been awarded annually since 2012 at the Leipzig Book Fair . The carrier is the Fantastic Academy e. V. based in Mannheim .
Literature Prize
All titles published in the respective calendar year can be submitted for the Seraph in the “Best Fantastic Novel” (Best Book) category. For the second category, the “Best Debut”, the first independent novel publications by German-speaking authors can be submitted. This young talent award is endowed with 2000 euros.
From 2012 to 2015, Stadtwerke Leipzig was the main sponsor of the award. The Leipzig Book Fair has supported the Fantastic Academy as a sponsor since 2016 . In the same year, the “Best Indie Author” was awarded for the first time in cooperation with neobooks .
In 2020, the award ceremony could not take place there due to the cancellation of the Leipzig Book Fair. Instead, the winners were announced in a live stream on Twitch , moderated by Tommy Krappweis . Upon request, Twitch stated that over 3,800 people with accounts had followed the award ceremony.
Further conditions of participation
- It is a neat publication with ISBN .
- The publication may not have been published by a printing subsidy publisher. Self-published publications can only be submitted in the "Best independent title" category.
- The minimum reading age is 14 years (no children's books ).
- It cannot be short stories, anthologies or volumes of poetry.
- For series titles , a maximum of one title in the series may be submitted.
- Five titles may be submitted per publisher and category.
Electoral process
The Seraph is a jury award. The jury consists of around 20 people (21 members in 2018), who are nominated anew every year. In addition to publishing editors, journalists, book bloggers and authors are also represented. Interested readers can apply for the place of the readers' jury. The Fantastic Academy selects titles for the long list from all submissions. From this, the jury selects the titles for the short list in a voting process . The winners will be announced at the Leipzig Book Fair.
