Kai Meyer was born in Lübeck in 1969 and grew up in the Rhineland . After graduating from the Franken-Gymnasium in Zülpich in 1988 , he studied film, theater and philosophy for a few semesters and then volunteered for a daily newspaper.

After a few years as a journalist - including for the Cologne tabloid Express and as a film critic for the HOWL magazine - Meyer has been working as a freelance writer since 1995. He published his first book at the age of 24. Since then he has written over 50 novels for adults and young people, as well as comics, scripts and radio plays. Four of his novels were originally published under the pseudonym "Alexander Nix", but are now available under his real name. Based on concepts by Kai Meyer, the American James A. The director Dominik Graf filmed Meyer's novel The Vow in 2007 - based on the life of the writer Clemens Brentano . A theater version premiered in Koblenz in summer 2013.
