The Nizaris are subjugated by an army of the Mongol Khan Hülegü and Khur Shah is executed. The Mongols are helped by Khur Shah's confidante, Shadhan. The Mongolian army, instigated by Shadhan, moves on to Baghdad. Sinaida, who wants to take revenge on Shadhan, also goes there.

In the meantime, Albertus' group has also arrived in Baghdad . After a short siege, the city is conquered and devastated by the Mongols. Albertus' group managed to escape and sailed with Sinaida on a Persian ship to the south coast of Arabia, always on Shadhan's trail. With camels they reach the desert landscape of Rub al-Chali , where the garden of God is said to have once been.
