Augustów raid

The Augustów Raid (Polish Obława augustowska ) was an operation carried out in July 1945 by Soviet security forces, supported by Polish Communist units, in the Augustów area as part of the fight against the Polish anti-communist underground , in which around 7,000 people were arrested and under Torture were interrogated. About 600 of the prisoners were abducted in an unknown direction, their death circumstances have not yet been clarified.

In 1995, in response to an official Polish request, the Russian Military Prosecutor's Office confirmed that there were around 7,000 detainees in the above Action and the further fate of the 592 (missing) people arrested by SMERSch is unknown.

It was the greatest crime of the communist regime in Poland after the end of World War II .

On July 9, 2015, the Sejm set July 12 as the National Day of Remembrance for the victims of the Augustów raid in July 1945 ( Narodowy Dzień Pamięci Ofiar Obławy Augustowskiej z lipca 1945 ).
