The district town of Augustów [ aʊ̯ˈgustuf ] ( Lithuanian Augustavas ) is a spa town in northeastern Poland in the Podlaskie Voivodeship . The place is now known for water sports. In the center of the city you can visit houses in the late classical and eclectic style. In 1970 Augustów became a health resort , three years later the neighboring villages were incorporated.

history

The place was first mentioned in 1496. The Polish King Sigismund II August. Gave the town on May 17, 1557 the town charter by Magdeburg Law .

In 1656 the place was destroyed by the Tatars . In the second half of the 17th century the city was ravaged by the plague. In 1795 Augustów became part of Prussia . In 1807 he came to the Duchy of Warsaw and then became part of Congress Poland in 1815 .

The Augustów Canal ( Kanał Augustowski in Polish ) was built from 1825 to 1839 . This was proposed by Poland for UNESCO World Heritage . In 1842 the place became a district town. In 1899 it was connected to the railway network.

From 1939 to 1941 Augustów was occupied by the Red Army , then by the Wehrmacht until 1944 . The city was 70% destroyed during this time and lost a large part of its population. Since then, the city has been in the critical Suwalki gap .

Augustów raid

In July 1945, in the so-called Augustów raid in the Augustów area, as part of the fight against the Polish anti-communist underground , around 7,000 people were arrested and interrogated under torture. Around 600 of the prisoners were abducted in an unknown direction and the circumstances of their deaths have not yet been clarified. It was the greatest crime of the communist regime in Poland after the end of World War II .
