history

Alexander Church in Suwałki

The northern part of the country of the Sudauer came to the Prussian monastic state (later East Prussia ); the southern part was conquered by Poles and Lithuanians, and later border agreements between the order state, Lithuania and Poland as Podolia became part of Lithuania.

Until 1795 the city of Suwałki belonged to the Grand Duchy of Poland-Lithuania . During the Third Partition of Poland , Suwałki became part of Prussia , was united with the Duchy of Warsaw in 1807 and, together with Congress Poland, came to the Russian Empire in 1815 .

From 1919 Suwałki belonged to the Second Polish Republic . With the Treaty of Suwałki 1920 an end to the border conflicts between Poland and Lithuania was planned, but the treaty was broken before it came into force.

Suwałki was occupied by the Wehrmacht during the attack on Poland in autumn 1939 and from then on, as the capital of the Sudauen district, it belonged to East Prussia, contrary to international law . Suwałki was renamed Suwalken in December 1939 and was called Sudauen from 1941 . In 1944 the city was captured by the Red Army . Since then, the city has been called Suwałki again and belongs to Poland again.

In its last administrative reform, Poland created a district of Suwałki . The city of Suwałki itself has the status of an urban district (actually miasto na prawach powiatu, "city with rights of a powiat ").

The border between Poland and Lithuania runs near the municipality. This border section, which is around 100 km long, is the only border between the NATO state Poland and one of the three Baltic states that are also NATO members. Since the conquest and annexation of Crimea by Russia in March 2014, this so-called Suwalki gap has been one of the most militarily sensitive points in Europe.

Rural community of Suwałki

Suwałki is the seat of a rural community of the same name, but is not part of it. The rural community covers the city almost completely and has an area of 264.8 km² on which 7706 people live (June 30, 2019).
