Life

As a child, together with five siblings, she became a half-orphan due to the death of her mother Scholastyka at an early age. Her father Józef Wasiłowski raised her in the spirit of Catholicism and the Polish nation. In September 1862 she married the landlord Jarosław Konopnicki. Soon the residents of the estate were involved in the January uprising and had to flee. The Konopnickis went to Germany and only returned after the general amnesty of 1865. Since they lived beyond their means, the now eight-member family had to sell the 1872 good and in a smaller Vorwerk move nearby. In 1877 Maria separated from her husband and moved with the children to Warsaw , where she worked as a writer and tutor. After 1890 she stayed abroad more often because of a sick daughter. In 1902, for her 25th anniversary as a writer, she was given a small estate in Gutarnowiec near Krosno , where a museum is now in her honor. Konopnicka died in a Lviv sanatorium in 1910 and was buried in the Lychakiv Cemetery.

Konopnicka made her debut in Kaliszanin magazine in 1875 . In the following years she published in many other papers and edited a number of volumes of poetry. She achieved particular fame, which continues to this day, through her patriotic song Rota (for example, “Vow”), which was at times referred to as Poland's unofficial national anthem . In general, she is considered one of the most important representatives of Polish positivism .
