Jozef Gajewski

Józef Gajewski (born November 21, 1948 in Olecko , Poland; † July 25, 2010 in Castiglion Fiorentino , Italy) was the city president (mayor) of Suwałki .

Gajewski studied at the Białystok University ( Politechnika Białostocka ). He later studied at the Warsaw School of Economics (SGH). In 1981 Józef Gajewski, who at that time belonged to the communist Polska Zjednoczona Partia Robotnicza , became mayor of Suwałki for the first time. In 2002 he was re-elected mayor as a member of Sojusz Lewicy Demokratycznej - Unia Pracy . He had to face a runoff against Jarosław Zieliński. In 2006 he again successfully applied for mayor's office, now as an independent candidate, and remained President Suwałki until his death.

Józef Gajewski died while on vacation in Italy, probably of a heart attack .
