Slovyanoserbsk ( Ukrainian Слов'яносербськ ; Russian Славяносербск Slavyanoserbsk ) is an urban-type settlement in Luhansk Oblast in eastern Ukraine . It has 7900 inhabitants (2016) and is the administrative center of the Rajon of the same name . The city is located in the Donets Basin on the right bank of the Donets 32 km northwest of the Luhansk Oblast center . The closest train station is in Symohirja, 15 km south of the village.

history

Slovyanoserbsk was founded by Serbian hussars under the name Pidhirne (Ukrainian Підгірне ) in 1753 as the seat of the local high command of the Novoslobidskyi Cossack Regiment, an administrative-territorial and military unit in Ukraine, to protect the borders of the Russian state from the attacks of the Protecting Turks and Tatars .

1784, the village was in town and Donezke (Ukrainian Донецьке ) renamed. In the 19th century, the city was the administrative center of Ujesd Slowjanoserbsk in the Yekaterinoslav governorate . In 1817 the city was named Slovianosserbske (Ukrainian Слов'яносербське ) and in 1883 it lost its city status. In 1960 the place became an urban-type settlement and has been the center of the district since the establishment of the Raion in 1966.Since the summer of 2014, the village has been occupied by separatists from the Lugansk People's Republic during the Ukraine War, the settlement is located near the front line between the Ukrainian troops and the separatists.
