Birjukowe (Ukrainian Бірюкове - Ukrainian officially since May 12, 2016 Krynytschne / Криничне ; Russian Бирюково / Birjukowo ) is an urban-type settlement in eastern Ukraine with around 4,000 inhabitants.
geography
The place in Luhansk Oblast is located on the Kundryuchya River , about 15 kilometers south of the district capital Sverdlovsk and 73 kilometers southeast of the Oblast capital Luhansk . The border with Russia runs about five kilometers east of the town.
Birjukowe forms administratively together with the settlements Dowschanske (Довжанське) and Bratske (Братське) a joint settlement council.
history
The place was founded in 1778 as Krinichnoye (Криничное) by former serfs from Rowenky and Krasnovka, and in 1967 it was finally named an urban-type settlement. In 1920 the place got its current name, the revolutionary Birjukow is considered to be the eponym .
Since the summer of 2014, the town has been occupied by separatists from the Lugansk People's Republic during the war in Ukraine .
