Sjewjerodonezk ( Ukrainian Сєвєродонецьк , until 2008 Сєверодонецьк Sjewerodonezk ; Russian Северодонецк Severodonetsk ) is a city in the west of the Luhansk Oblast in Ukraine with about 110,000 inhabitants (as of 2016).
history
A chemical combine (Azot) and a workers' settlement Lis-chimstroj (Лисхимстрой) were founded in 1934. In 1950 the settlement was renamed Severodonetsk and received city rights in 1954. As part of the conflict in eastern Ukraine since 2014, the administration for the parts of Luhansk Oblast that remained under Ukrainian control was located in Levjerodonetsk.
geography
Sjewjerodonetsk is located about 70 km northwest of Luhansk and 100 km northeast of the city of Donetsk in the neighboring Donetsk Oblast . The city lies on the banks of the Siversky Donets , the largest tributary on the right bank of the Don .
Severodonetsk divided administratively next to the city proper in the settlements of urban type Boriwske , Metjolkine , Syrotyne and Woronowe , the villages Bobrowe ( Боброве ) Wojewodiwka ( Воєводівка ) and Oskoloniwka ( Осколонівка ) and the settlements Lisna dacha ( Лісна Дача ) pavlohrad ( Павлоград ) and Synezkyj ( Синецький ).
economy
Levjerodonetsk is an important location for the chemical industry in Ukraine. In addition, the city acts as an administrative center for the Ukrainian-controlled parts of Luhansk Oblast.
traffic
For inner-city traffic there is public transport, which consists of several bus lines and trolleybus lines . There is a train station near Sjevjerodonetsk ( Lysychansk , 4 km away), from which trains to Kiev and regional trains run. There is a bus station in the city with national and international connections. Levjerodonetsk has an airport that has not been used commercially since the collapse of the Soviet Union .
