Bilowodsk ( Ukrainian Біловодськ ; Russian Беловодск Belovodsk ) is an urban-type settlement in eastern Ukraine on the bank of the Derkul , a tributary of the Siversky Donets with about 8,100 inhabitants (2014).

Located in the center of Bilovodsk Raion in Luhansk Oblast , Bilovodsk is the administrative center of the Raion 98 km north of Luhansk Oblast center .

history

Bilovodsk was founded by Cossacks in 1686 , making it one of the oldest settlements in Sloboda-Ukraine . From June 13, 1942 to January 20, 1943 the place was occupied by the troops of the Wehrmacht . From 1779 to 1860 Bilovodsk had the status of a city and since 1957 Bilovodsk has the status of an urban-type settlement. The name of the settlement (Bilowodsk means "white water") goes back to the clear, "white" water of the Derkul river, on which the place is located.
