history

Brianka was founded in 1696. A strong development of the place began with the mining of the coal deposits around the city since the middle of the 19th century. On July 12, 1942, the city was occupied by the German Wehrmacht and liberated by the Soviet army on September 2, 1943 . Brianka has had city status since 1962.

The city has been under the control of the internationally unrecognized People's Republic of Lugansk since 2014 and, according to the Ukrainian government, belongs to an area in which the organs of state power temporarily do not exercise their powers.
