Popasna ( Ukrainian Попасна ; Russian Попасная Popasnaja ) is a city in Luhansk Oblast in eastern Ukraine with 21,257 inhabitants (2013).
Geographical location
The city, located in the Donets Basin , is the administrative center of the raion of the same name a few kilometers west of Pervomajsk and 85 km west of the Luhansk Oblast center .
history
Popasna was founded on the railway line to Debaltseve and Kramatorsk as a railway station in 1878. Since 1910 the place has been a major railway junction, which on October 24, 1938 received the status of a city. When it was elevated to the status of a city, the place was named LM Kahanowytscha in honor of the Soviet politician LM Kaganowitsch . Since 1944 the city has been called Popasna again.
In the course of the war in Ukraine , fighting broke out in the area; it was captured on July 8, 2014 by the separatist troops of the Lugansk People's Republic , but was brought back under Ukrainian control on July 22, 2014 by the Donbass battalion . Since then, the place has been close to the front line to the separatist areas and is repeatedly the target of rocket and artillery attacks.
